#LimpopoAbductions suspect released on bail for a third time
The Moosa family of Polokwane has expressed serious concern after one of the suspects in the kidnapping syndicate was released on bail for a third time.
Masilo Kgafane was released on R1000 bail by the Tzaneen Magistrates Court after he was re-arrested last week on an a charge of theft by false pretence.
He and another suspect, Samuel Kobo, were earlier granted bail of R5000 each in the Sekhukhune Magistrates Court on a charge of armed robbery.
The men, together with a third suspect, Benny Mudau were released on R10 000 bail each by the Polokwane Magistrates Court on 19 May 2016 following the abduction of Anisah Moosa (35) on 15 March.
The gang is allegedly responsible for a spate of kidnappings. They also face charges of attempted murder after three police officers were shot and wounded during a sting operation during which Anisah was freed.
The gang allegedly demanded R3m ransom from Anisah’s family.
During the bail hearing in the abduction case, hundreds of people protested outside court demanding that the accused should not be released on bail.
Moosa Family spokesman, Yusuf Abramjee, said: “The release of Kgafane for a third time on bail, despite him facing serious charges, is a serious indictment on our justice system.
“The family feels that the justice system is letting victims down badly. We are shocked at the release of Kgafane,” he said.
Abramjee said the family has asked the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) to appeal the bail decision in all three cases.
“How are suspects who face serious charges released on bail repeatedly and so easily? The system is letting us down,” Abramjee added.
Family attorney, Raeesa Rhemtula, said: “The family is very disappointed at the repeated granting of bail. They have instructed me to ask authorities for a full and urgent investigation.”
The family has written to the Ministry of Justice, Ministry of Police, Director of Public Prosecutions and Acting police commissioner calling for “urgent intervention.”
